Step One - Observe

Can you find the sheep having the last supper?

What do you think the pictures are trying to teach you about the Kingdom of God?

Step Two - Learn

Mark 14:12-25

Click Here to read Mark 14:12-25.

  • What one word or idea stood out to you and why?
  • What do you think Jesus is teaching about the Kingdom of God/Heaven?
  • Have you ever had communion before? What did you do? How did you feel?

Ask your group to name some things they do every day: sleep, eat, drink, brush teeth, breathe, talk… etc. Jesus wanted to pick something for His followers to remember Him by until He returns. He chose something that most of us do every day; eat and drink. Jesus chose something so common so we, His followers, would think of him a lot. Many people call this communion (the Lord’s supper, sacraments, elements or Eucharist). Jesus meant for communion to be a part of our everyday lives.

NOTE: Here we want to be sensitive to different faith traditions. Some believe that anyone can serve communion. Others believe that only a pastor or priest can serve communion. Similarly, some believe that only true believers in Jesus can take communion. Others feel that anyone can take communion as long as you are remembering Jesus in the process. 1 Corinthians 11:27 says that individuals should not receive communion in an ‘unworthy manner.’ We, the authors, are teaching from the perspective that anyone can serve communion. We deeply respect others who believe differently. So please proceed however you feel comfortable as you and your group take communion together.

We are going to take communion together right now to remember what Jesus did and that He is coming back one day.

Leader: Prays.

Dear, Jesus, thank You for suffering and dying on the cross for our sins. We want to remember You and what You did for us now.

Read Mark 14:22.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

(Leader offers the bread for people to break off and eat.)

Group: Spend a few moments in silent prayer remembering Jesus body that was broken for us and eating the bread.

Leader: Read Mark 14:23-25.

“Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.””

(Leader offers the drink in cups.)

Group: Spend a few moments in silent prayer remembering Jesus’ body that was broken for us and drinking when you are ready.

Step Three - Pray

Read Mark 14:12-25 again:

How are you different after reading these verses?

Prayer:

Dear Father in heaven, thank You for this great reminder of your Son. Please help me to remember Jesus whenever I am eating and drinking. I can’t wait until to come back Jesus. Until then, help me to love people like You did and live like You did. Amen.
